Prologue
Dan's
mother weakly stroked his placid face with the hand she could still control and
smiled desperate encouragement to him through her tears.
What
else could she do? She couldn't reassure him with baby talk, she couldn't sing
to him to show how much she loved him or how much she wanted him to be happy in
his life. He had beautiful eyes but there was no point in trying to tell him so
because he wouldn't hear a word.
The
need to communicate something to him at that moment was so intense, so powerful
... but the only link she had with her helpless little baby boy, imprisoned in
his non-hearing body, was the touch of her hand on his cheek and the bond
between their eyes.
After
the counselling and advice from the hospital, she and his father had taken
Dan's special needs arising from his deafness n their stride . Somehow she knew
that yesterday's terrible motorway accident, which had already torn away his
father, would soon take away his mother as well.
Her
beloved son would be an orphan.. with only his Godfather, her brother Patrick ,
to look after him. If only she could be
sure Patrick would cope with Dan's complete deafness with the same compassion
and determination for him to succeed,
that she and his father had resolved upon after
learning of his condition from the hospital.
Wearing
an earnest, yearning expression, she tenderly kissed her baby son for the last
time on his tiny, wrinkled forehead..
and then she died...
